Canada Geese on Crawford Lake in the Morning

Canada geese cleave the autumn colours on the mirrored surface of Crawford Lake in southern Ontario. Core samples from the sediments of this small lake revealed spores from cultivated corn and led to the discovery of a nearby Iroquoian village complete with the foundations of long houses, the traditional dwellings of the native inhabitants of this area. The waters of the pond itself do not mix vertically and, consequently, only the surface layers have oxygen and support small fish and turtles. Organic material descending to the bottom is preserved, for lack of the oxygen needed for decay - hence the discovery of several hundred year old cultivated corn spores.
