About the Subject: Carmel-by-the-Sea exudes art, quaintness and endless individual details - a treasure trove for painters and photographers. Spanish/Mexican influences are abundant throughout the commercial and residential enclaves.
About the Photo: The arched staircase with adobe walls and tiled steps leads to an iron gate at the top and offices. Late afternoon sun dapples the walls and casts the shadow of trees and a street lamp.While a human eye can simultaneously see both the bright sun-lit portions and the considerably darker interior and top of the stairs, the camera can not. This image was constructed from five photographs with different exposures. The over-exposed captured the dark areas and the under-exposed the bright areas. Combined, the exposure is balanced overall into a single image.
